A WORD WITH THE ARTIST // bio
STEVE LUCERO
“LUCERO” in Spanish, translates to “light” or “bright star”. My ancestry sprouts from a lineage of artists & explorers. I was born & raised in Los Angeles and learned my first forms of film photography at the age of 10, from my dear mother. I recall my initial encounter with the ethereal, marveling at the mesmerizing process of capturing and framing light within the confines of a dark box. Since then, I have followed a divine path as a disciplined artist; now spanning 21 years as a professional photographer among a spectrum of industries.
My very first jobs began around 2003, shooting Hollywood nightclubs to local publications & artists around Los Angeles. By 2011, I was working in my very own photography studio in Lincoln Heights. In 2014, I founded my second studio, next door, called The Artery: A boutique production studio founded as a photographer collective. It was an incubator in assisting the development of artists & showcasing their work in the production studio’s gallery space. The Artery has had the opportunity to be a foundation of support for a range of LA based artists, all while hosting a gamut of local artist communities for movie screenings, poetry nights, book signings & artist’s very first solo exhibitions. The studio now acts as the base of operations for processing all of my own digital photography and media; in addition to art productions and artist advocacy.
From 2015 to 2018 I was the onset Unit Photographer on the Emmy Award winning Hallmark Channel TV show, “Home & Family” recorded on the Universal Studios Hollywood back lots. The show was based on cutting-edge, speed production. This high-paced show demanded a fine-tuned skill set requiring the capture, and delivery of nearly one thousand images daily. Working alongside Hollywood luminaries such as Henry Winkler, Dana Carvey, Jane Seymour—maintaining such a standard of quality was quite a personal accomplishment at the time; befitting the show’s acclaim.
Billy Farrel (Left) and myself.
Far from my humble beginnings in nightlife–I maintained my presence atop Hollywood’s rooftop events. It was then, in 2016, that my journey reached a new high as I was scouted by the esteemed event photographer, Mr. Billy Farrel. I’d been appointed exclusively to cover Hollywood’s most elite & private events for one of the largest global image syndications in the world: Billy Farrel Agency (BFA.com). Producing alluring images, night after night, of such notable celebrities including the Kardashians, Cher, Joaquin Pheonix, Sharon Stone, etc. and delivering worldwide syndication by 8am for next-day publication. Once again, a personal feat; while the work had hit worldwide distribution along with the attention, by a slew of companies…(such as: Chanel, Ferragamo, Sotheby’s, Vanity Vair, Bulgari, etc.). World-class luxury enterprises, across the board, have exclusively bestowed my work and ability to capture invaluable moments that precisely represent their semblance of stature; in time.
Beyond the brilliance of Hollywood, I also contribute my skills toward the preservation of Los Angeles’ historic architecture & an assortment of local sub-cultures. Engaging in journalism assignments for conservancy groups, I advocate for the protection of LA’s architectural treasures. In addition, I currently serve as an elected official of the Lincoln Heights Neighborhood Council, where I champion community and environmental awareness. It is reaffirming for me, and my commitment to the city that has shaped my artistic vision.
Thank you for this opportunity to introduce myself. My general tact in service keeps me mostly as a quiet shadow among such delicate moments to which I speak to most; with my camera. I consider my craft an art, in the specific mixture I choose to splash light; in dynamic environments—while complimenting the subjects. I’m prepared at all moments and you can rest assured it will be in the most pristine light possible. Therefore, I am genuinely honored to maintain my presence and skills among the prestige of latter-day Los Angeles. Enthralled by the opportunities to come; here is to manifesting the most cherishing moments we can experience, as divine beings; for you and your dynasty.
Sincerely,
